The death march for Web radio

By gschultz Posted on Mar 24, 2010 / 4:33 AM CT

WOXY.com – considered to be the first station in the United States to move from terrestrial broadcast to online – announced that the station is shutting down due to “current economic realities and the lack of ongoing funding”. Community Impact – Southwest Austin (Tx) has more on this story.

I’m sure the recently increased webcasting rates had a big impact on WOXY.com closing down as the new rates are having a chilling effect on web radio: a Philadelphia radio station ceases its online stream; Last.fm charges users outside the United States, United Kingdom and Germany; Pandora charges users that listen over 40 hours; CBS radio block users outside of the U.S.

This is crappy decision! I’m living i Sweden. Til this morning I could listen to AM1090 in Seattle. Later today I get the message: “Your geographic location is forbidden”.Now I have to fix a VPN to U.S to get around this. Geo IP targeting should sooner or later be uselees.
